Siegfried Idyll was originally titled Tribschen Idyll by the recipient of this gift of music, Wagner’s wife, Cosima. The title referred to the name of the Swiss villa in which they were living. Later, because of use in concert music, the title was arbitrarily changed, thus referencing the operatic character Siegfried and Richard’s and Cosima’s son named Siegfried. Many believe this piece to be the greatest gift of romance and art ever extended to another individual. After the first playing, Richard presented the score to Cosima as a birthday gift—her birthday was December 25th.
