The theme is very clearly stated at the beginning of the piece. As the variations proceed, the theme is gradually manipulated. Each variation increasingly hides the theme to a point where only portions of it are recognizable. The final movement states the theme as the subject for a brief fugal section, and the theme is stated one final time at the conclusion of the work. The composer's goal with this piece was to create a melody that could stand alone or be used in different harmonic contexts (theme, var.1, var.5). In addition, the composer separated the theme into different pieces, and those pieces become the motivic material for new melodies (var.2-4).
