Capriccio for flute and piano was composed in 1986. The composer wanted to write a work that could be played by an advanced college student, and during those years it was performed by several students at recitals and studio classes. The composer also set out to make the piano part interesting and integral to the piece. The form is sonata-allegro. The first theme utilizes irregular, fragmented ideas passing back and forth capriciously between the flute and piano. The contrasting second theme consists of long, lyrical lines complemented by a syncopated rhythm pattern.
