The Planets became Holst’s best known work. It was meant to be a series of ‘mood pictures’ rather than anything concretely connected with astrology or astronomy, though Holst was known to have been using the book "What Is A Horoscope" by Alan Leo as a guide.
This arrangement for horn sextet is from the movement Mercury, also known as the Winged Messenger
This quicksilver scherzo, Mercury, the Winged Messenger, is full of light contrasts that change on a dime. For Holst, Mercury was the “symbol of the mind,” and people born under its influence possess “quickness of thought, fertility of resources” and adaptability, wit as well as a love of gossip.
