Pastorale for flute and piano was composed in 1986. It was intended as a companion piece to Capriccio, but it may be performed alone. The form is three-part song form or ABA. A haunting, sustained melody in the flute is accompanied by a slow moving ostinato in the piano. The middle section contains fragmented ideas echoing between the flute and piano in the higher registers. The final section is a return to the material heard at the beginning.
