When a University of Minnesota student asked the composer to compose a piece for her senior violin recital in 1990, Petersen learned that the student was known for having some fiddling skills. She built the ideas for Chicken Scratches on a Turkey Theme from that old favorite, “Turkey in the Straw,” weaving a little hoe-down into a tongue-in-cheek piece saturated with “Turkey” motives.
