Considered to be Petersen’s first serious piece, not only because of its length and technical requirements, but because it was written while she was under the aural influence of the dissonant tonal language. Reluctant to embrace twentieth century dissonance as a performer until her senior year of college, when her organ professor encouraged her to learn Hindemith’s Sonata No. 2. It is no coincidence, then, that many musicians have recognized the influence of Hindemith’s style in this Sonata No. 1, especially in the first movement. This piece won her first honor in composition, the 1985 Richard Hillert Award in Composition.
