Brass Tasks, was commissioned by the Gustavus Adolphus College/Mankato State University faculty brass quintet and premiered at Gustavus Adolphus College in 1998. The work is a five-movement suite, beginning with the fanfare “Wake-up Call.” “Air Craft” is a slow chorale-like movement utilizing five-four meter and jazz harmony. “Humoreske” is a lively rondo in six-eight meter. The fourth movement, “Ballad of the Bells,” is a melancholy waltz that features flugelhorn and trombone solos on the melody. The suite ends with “Blast of Brass,” characterized by a fast tempo, sudden dynamic shifts, and driving rhythms.
